In the diet that i am feeding my 8yr old pug (treatment for DM) it has me including raw garlic and ginger (about a small clove for a weeks worth of feedings) The diet is based on Brown Rice, Carrot, Brocolli, Grn Pepper, Spinach, Organic Cooked Beef. Because I have stuggled with my Frenchie's diet (allergies) her entire life, we decided to try some in her regular foood (she gets fish/potato FIRST MATE brand) and her eyes are red, tearing.

I have read lots on garlic and some say NO some YES. does anyone feed thier dog garlic or ginger ??? Also, anyone in Canada that can tell me what BRAND they are feeding (and if you make your own food (with what/how) or buy raw) I am still struggling, 3years now... still don't have it right. I was told low protien for Bulldogs. Also, my dog gets sick (vomit) on Duck so my last resort has been fish.

I would like to say for all those suffering, your dog is chewing thier damn paws off... try HEMP OIL. my Frenchie stopped within literally days. 1 problem solved, still the food issue to figure out.

Thank you so very much for your provided insight, was useful. I am always learning!! I just switched to Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Venison (didn't know they had fish) Seems like alot of Frenchie owners like Natural Balance. Guess we will give it a try. If not, may look at thier Potato and Duck that was also mentioned. Thank you again, your Louie is lovely !!!

My Louie has some mild food allergies. He's done the best on Natural Balance sweet potato and fish formula.

I've heard and read that garlic can be toxic to dogs, when given in large amounts. But having said that, I was looking at a sample package of Innova or Evo dog food, and on the front of it, it said it had garlic as one of the ingredients. I think garlic is okay to give, as long as it is in really small amounts. I'm not sure what exact dosage is safe and what is not, but you could probably google it.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this but, vegetables are really not necessary for a dogs diet, and it is really hard for them to digest a lot of vegetables. I do know of some dogs that must be on a vegetarian diet, due to having allergies to all meat protein sources, but I wouldn't feed a dog that much vegetables in their diet unless it was absolutely necessary.

Have you tried doing an elimination diet to find out just exactly what protein source your dog is allergic to?

Also - although brown rice is much healthier for humans, white rice is better for dogs, and easier for them to digest. The rice could also be bothering her, as a lot of dogs are allergic to rice. An alternative to using rice is a cooked and cut up or mashed regular potato, sweet potato, or you can also use oatmeal.
