Lola has been scooting more than usual lately. I had her anal glands expressed on Friday but they said there was very little to express and it did not seem to help. I am planning on taking her in to her doctor on Tuesday unless anyone has any ideas that i might be missing?I wipe her bottom after each poop and her toosh is always clean. I just feel so bad for her. What a terrible feeling to have an itch you can't scratch!
Does she have environmental allergies? They could be starting to act up due to the weather change.. not sure where you're located but it's definitely beginning to turn into Spring here.. which can cause their allergies to start acting up. Poor Lola, she just can't catch a break, can she?
My Emmy does this and there is nothing medically wrong with her. Anal glands are fine and we had her checked for worms just in case...all clear. My kids have nicknamed this little display the "scoot & scratch" =)
Frenchies scoot for all kinds of reasons... They also drag themselves across carpeting, forwards and backwards, stretch their bodies, and raise their hind legs to stretch them as well... If it's not Lola's anal glands, a flea infestation, or tapeworms, it could simply be an unusual habit that she enjoys... And sometines, dogs just have an itch to scratch... Best wishes : )
oH BOY. oK I HAVE GONE THROUGH THIS WTH MY LITTLE GIRL. I realized that she had a sore spot on her cooch. (Vagina lips) i put some Sourolan drops on her sore spot and it healed up quick. The other time i noticed her scooting her butt on the floor and I though it was the same thing but it turned out to be impacted glands. So off to the Vet and had her cleaned out. lol
Nasty stink. lol hahahahha
Then there was the most recent when I noticed her scooting again and I checked her and saw little spots of dirt near and around her stubby tail. I though it was just dirt but it turned out she had fleas all around her tail having a feast. I got pissed of with the damn fleas. So I gave her a flea bath and made sure I got every last one of em. then I continued her bath and blow dried her till she was all soft white as snow and flea free.
That was the last time she scooted. So you see there are many reasons why they scoot.
she may have some sort of allergies. nothing major though. she licks her paws after being outside but it seems she scoots mostly after she poops. always backwards. i guess i will try to get her into the doc. she is on sentinal, so the flea and worm thing should be taken care of. i just wonder if her spina bifoda may make it easier for the glands to get impacted? i just feel so bad for her. but her ears seem to be getting better! i am just a real paranoid mommy after the terrible ordeal with my dobie and i want to make sure she is always as comfortable as possible and i don't miss anything, you Know?
Aww, Karin.. you are a great mommy! If her anal glands are not full, she's flea-free, and doesn't have any type of worm.. then I'd say she's just trying to get an itch, or her butt just may be a little bit itchy because of her allergies but I'm sure it's not anything major, I'm sure it's bothering you seeing her itch, more than the itch is actually bothering her. :) Once in awhile Louie will scoot in a circle, and he doesn't have anything wrong with him either.. we just figure he's got an itchy spot he's trying to scratch on his own since he can't bite at his butt like other breeds.
One other thing to consider is whether she has a corkscrew tail... Not obvious from her photos, but dogs with corkscrew tails can easily develop yeast / bacterial infections in the folds and because they can't scratch inside the grooves, they'll scoot in order to try and relieve the itch... If she has a corkscrew tail, it's important to learn how to clean it properly, and especially dry the folds to prevent further infections... There are special topical ointments that need to be applied regularly, and they need to be wiped to prevent further infections from breaking out. Good wishes : )
Hi Karin, initially when Sassy did this it was her anal glands needing to be expressed. But when she did it again I checked her cooch (as Erick says) and found a few small wood chip pieces-- who knew... So every couple of days I wash her vaginal area esp. when she chases the kids on the playground, which is covered in wood chips. I've also found that a lot of the time there's just an itch that needs to be scratched since she can't lick back there. I hope that's all it is; just an itch...
yeah, i wonder about the hooha area. it seems she is alittle larger there then most but it does not look irritated. yes she has a corkscrew tail. k. heres a funny question too. do your kids wiggle their tails at all? Lolas does not move so i didnt know if that was just due to her corkscrew tail or her spina bifoda? she is so hard to read. no big butt wiggling when shes happy. just jumps up and down when excited. never realized how much i rely on a tail to help me read a dog. i dont think it is anything major, it is just nice to hear other peoples experiences on these things i have never dealt with.
thanks all!
hhaahaha oh boy good answers ladies. I think if it does have to do with the cork screw tail thing then wash it really good and then use some zinc cream to add to her folds between the atil. That will help alleviate any discomfort and it will dry any yeast problems. Zinc is really good cream to get. Baby Diaper rash cream. Works great in the wrinkles and moist spots.
Erick
Yeah, my Ellie has a corkscrew tail, I clean underneath where her tail goes inward about once a week, and put desitin (diaper rash) cream under there to keep it dry and to keep it from getting irritated. Ellie can wiggle her tail a little, and wags her whole butt when she's happy.. Louie has a regular Frenchie "cotton tail" as a tail, and he cannot wag his at all, nor does he really wiggle his butt, he just flattens his ears and sneezes all over you and gives you kisses and jumps all over you when he's happy.. lol.
Lovey has a corkscrew tail, too, and I've noticed that if she gets REALLY happy it rises up a bit and wiggles. LOL I'll keep a close eye on that, too. So far I think she's just having environmental itchies. Cleaned her ears last night, ick! Had been two weeks, think I need to be more diligent about doing them every week.
