Our 8 month old male frenchie has been excessively licking his oogles at night. He sleeps with us and sometimes it can be quite bothersome. I tried cortisone spray like the vet said and then I had bitter taste spray that I spray on the rugs and is safe to spray on him. It only works for a short time. Has anyone else had this issue? There is no other medical issue the vet can find. Could he be allergic to grass????

If the dog's not infested with fleas, it's normal for dogs to groom themselves, especially their groin / pelvic areas... It's also normal for dogs to groom other dogs and it's not necessarily something you want to deter them from doing - within reason... Is your puppy still intact? If he is, he's probably experiencing maturity and like adolescents he's undergoing some normal changes associated with "puberty"... He's a bit itchier "there" and he needs to keep his jewels clean and comfortable... He may start to lift his leg on objects or mark as well, both indoors and outdoors, so be conscious of this...

Here's a link that explains all this: http://www.petplace.com/dogs/licking-of-genital-area-in-dogs/page1....

Allergies manifest themselves between the ages of 6 months and 4 years, but a contact allergy to grass isn't necessarily going to make your dog only lick his jewels since he'd probably lick his paws as well and scratch himself wherever he could reach. When he licks himself too much, tell him a firm "NO", and then praise him soothingly when he ceases the unwanted behavior... Even he hasn't been neutered, you may want to get that done and there'll probably be a lot less middle-of-the-night smacking and licking noises. Cheers!

I have the same problem. My frenchie is a female and is about 1 year old. We only recently adopted her from a lady near my city. When I adopted her she gave me one set of medication to give to her twice a day that treats her allergies. Her former owner said she was diagnosed with allergies from her vet and was told to switch her food up and said it helped. My problem is she is always licking her privates when she gets the chance (she wakes me up all the time at night when she starts), she licks her paws and she also always scratches and she does have little black spots on her belly around her private area (id say basically her most of her lower body has it on her belly).
My plan was to switch her diet to BARF to see if that would take away her allergies. I just wanted to know if these were in fact all symptoms of allergies and if so if anyone has found out if making the switch really helps?

Trucker doesn't lick/itch anywhere else. He is on Wellness Core and natural balance venison canned food and has been on it for 3+ months. The first few days after giving him a bath he is good...no licking, but about the third day he starts this licking at night. I use the hydrocortison spray once at night tim with him.

Pricilla: your sounds like an allerigy...food or environmental.

I WISH LOLA COULD REACH!!!!! this is very interesting for me. the only thing lola can reach is her paws, which is why i think she licks those alot. i scratch her whenever she starts looking around wishing she could reach. i wipe her toosh and hooha and take care of any other need she has.
anyhoo, back to your question. make sure there is no discharge. this could be a sign of infection. my dobie licked his package alot sometimes too and if there is no infection, fleas or obvious allergies, maybe they just like it:) that would be just as embarrassing as lola scooting her toosh sometimes. i think she does this too because she cant reach it.
good luck!

Trucker has a whitish discharge but this is normal. He is licking mainly his testicles. I wonder if he is actually trying for his butt...Would he do all this licking if it was his anal gland??? Again he only does it at night in bed......
